“Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that’s just fabulous.” -Carrie Bradshaw, Sex & the City
Lately I have been thinking a lot about the meaning and value of relationships. I have been blessed with many great relationships, and then like everyone I have had my share of bad ones too, and I am not just talking about boyfriend/girlfriend relationships, I am talking about all relationships with family & friends included. I feel that I have spent many years of my life trying to maintain relationships that did not benefit me, but because I do not like to upset people I let them drag on and on. Over the past few years, I have learned that to have happy, successful relationships with anyone, you have to feel like your needs are getting met as well and that you are respected. I have to come to realize that some people just don’t get the balance of a relationship and that it is about BOTH or all the people involved, not just them. I am finally at a point in my life where I realize life is not a popularity contest, it is not about who has more friends than who, it is about surrounding yourself with the ones you love and the ones who truly make you happy, and in doing that you are making yourself happy!
